A brief stop on the way back. We even had people approaching us out here to take pictures of the buggies.

We were hoping for a bit of off-roading. The best we could find was a 12" deep pot hole on the side of the road (and we STILL had 6" of clearance!).

End of the road at Dough Flats. The road use to go further, but a storm a few years ago washed out the trail, making it difficult for even pack animals to get through and the County has decided not to fix it.

On the road again... A bit of rain a few days before kept most of the dust down.

Oh, now I see what they are looking at. It's quite the view.

Mel thought she saw smoke. A couple of curves later, everyone is stopped and looking at something on the left.

FIRE! Seems that a small 2-3 acre brush fire had started in the high country.

After calling the fire department, it was time to get out of there.

I had heard of this thermal anomaly before, but didn't know that it was right here. The sign is directly below where the fire was. Seems that hydrocarbon gas vents from the ground here (oil and coal deposits in the area) and an occasional land slide sparks a fire.

Look. Here comes a fire engine.

Oh, there's another one.

And another one.

And ANOTHER one.

And ANOTHER!

ANOTHER!

And they just keep on coming! Some were going so fast, we didn't have enough time to take pictures of all of them. There was even a helicopter.

Imagine all that equipment coming up a one lane dirt road, and in a hurry! We had to keep sharp eyes on the road, and find what ever space we could find so we wouldn't hold up any of the emergency equipment.
